The Beautiful Corner 8

I became interested in the idea of the "beautiful corner" while reading about the
artist Kazimir Malevich. The placement of a square on his canvas was said to be
positioned in the "beautiful corner." It seemed like such a poetic description. As I
dug deeper into the history of the phrase I discovered that the corner was the space
in traditional Orthodox homes where icons were placed and families worshiped. I
liked the idea of having a space, a quiet corner, to contemplate. It's very similar to
the alter traditions of Mexican and Mexican‐American families.

In many ways I consider these paintings as quiet gestures, perhaps easily passed by
or overlooked, but for some a respite from the noise of everyday.
